The Farewell
Summary-
George Washington sent out a letter in the newspaper for Philadelphia on September 19, 1796 , stating that it was time America found a new leader. He was voluntarily stepping down because of old age and injuries and dislike of his second term by certain people. People got panicky about finding a new leader. Washington and his Chief Justice, John Jay, set out to create a treaty with England that included England removing English ports and promised payment on pre-revolutionary debts. This treaty was also made to maybe avoid problems with England in the future.
George Washington wrote a draft of his farewell address and Hamilton edited it-shortening the speech in the end and cutting out ideas he had had for things such as his much wanted University. There were some problems stated in his address such as Natives still being in the land and the unpopular but true bit about English trade helping America's economy. People were sad to see him go. He finally left office in 1796 and died 3 years later.
