The Dinner
Summary-
On June 20, 1790 Thomas Jefferson held a dinner with guests James Madison and Alexander Hamilton to discuss the financial plan for the United States and the placement of the capital. Towards the end of the dinner, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton finally agreed with a compromise. James Madison would not be so opposed to "Hamilton's Plan" (Hamilton's financial plan), but what Alexander Hamilton had to agree on was allowing the spot for the capital to be near the Potomac River. Joseph Ellis suggests in the middle of the chapter that Hamilton and Madison's agreement did not get agreed to in one conversation, the agreement consisted of several secret conversation. George Washington did decide to put the capital near Potomac.
