The Silence
Summary-
In this chapter the Quakers create a petition for the House of Representatives with the purpose of ending Black slave trade. Most of the people in favor of slave trade lived in the southern area of the United States, particularly in Georgia and South Carolina. They believed that the Congress should ignore all petitions considering that our U.S. constitution stated that we couldn't do anything about the slave trade until 1808. The South even said they would secede if Congress did not talk about this issue. In order to not tear the U.S. apart the Congress did what the title of this chapter (The Silence) suggests, they kept all conversations about slavery private and "silent".
